Breakfasts in Montego Bay, Jamaica

Kiyo and I were just in St. Thomas, and staying with Zan’s parents. Her dad, an avid eyechow reader (thanks for the support!) observed that I post a lot about breakfast. This probably has something to do with the fact that I replaced my old Sunday Dinner posts with Sunday Brunch posts, to reflect that change in my life (which occurred after moving to NYC from college). But also, it’s true, I just like breakfast. Which is funny, considering that in high school I was never hungry in the morning, and I ate my “breakfast” (a snack) at 10 AM at school. Now, for whatever reason, I’m always ready to eat as soon as I wake up. Breakfast is special to me because it can set the tone for the day; that’s why I usually have a nutrient-packed smoothie. It’s the first thing you think about in the morning (for me it is, anyway); and it’s the one meal where it’s acceptable to eat what should probably be called “dessert,” such as French toast, Nutella, etc. I tend to go healthy at home but indulge at restaurants or on vacation.

My favorite meals have all or many of the components of taste, together but not clashing, which is why I so love breakfast and brunch; you can order a sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami component all at once. I’m thinking sour cream peach pancakes (sour) with bacon (salty) and maple syrup (sweet), with coffee (bitter) and a Bloody Mary (umami). That covers all five tastes; isn’t that cool? How could you not love it? I guess this is possible with other meals as well, but not as easy.

Anyways, here are some breakfast pictures from our trip to Jamaica in 2012. None of these seemed substantial enough for a dedicated post, but I still thought they were worth sharing. I love a good hotel breakfast buffet, and this one at the Ritz didn’t disappoint (also, who can resist those adorable little ketchups and Tabasco?). It was a great mixture of American and Jamaican or island-inspired foods, such as the Jamaican muesli (which did deserve its own post).

Each day I tried something new; this is a waffle with blueberries, maple syrup, whipped cream and coconut.

Above is ackee, which looks and feels like scrambled eggs, and the fried ball of dough is called “festival” in Jamaica. You can see I always put some fruit and a couple of slices of bacon on my plate, those are a must!

What are your thoughts on breakfast?
